EDUCATION OFFERINGS
Analysts and experts will provide insight and education on a variety of topics including: Sustainability in Baking, RealWear the Baking Industry Use-Case, What’s Trending and more.
A primary goal of the educational sessions is for attendees to leave with tangible take-aways that they can immediately apply in the workplace.
These education sessions will rotate throughout NEXUS for multiple opportunities to attend. Each session will be 45 minutes and led by professionals from both inside and outside of the baking industry.
EDUCATION SESSIONS
Delivering data from ABA and Baking & Snack’s new study ‘Sustainability and the Future of Baking,’ Charlotte will share the top insights on how wholesale bakers are defining sustainability, prioritizing it in their decision-making and which areas of their business they’re pursuing greener practices to make an impact. We will then hear from our baker and supplier panelists Justus and Karen on their companies’ initiatives and milestones when it comes to environmental, social, and corporate governance practices. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of what the industry is prioritizing when it comes to Sustainability and steps being taken by suppliers and bakers.

During the session industry leaders will discuss bakery specific use case examples, provide demonstrations and share knowledge-based best practices from lessons learned during their own implementations. During this session, specific indicators will be discussed, as well as examples of how to take the data provided and relate it directly to your business decisions.

In this roundtable-style session attendees will first learn the background of the OpX resource originally released by PMMI, and will then contribute to helping update the standard to current conditions and situations. To create the 43-page PDF, “One Voice for Hygienic Equipment Design for Low-Moisture Foods,” leading manufacturers collaborated to establish standard processes, steps and methods to help manufacturers collaborate with their original equipment manufacturers to reduce risk and increase compliance, and reach consensus on specific criteria for the design and construction of hygienic (a.k.a. sanitary) production equipment. The goal of the session(s) is to gather data and input from the baking industry to springboard the revision process.

Digital Twins of physical factories promise a detailed level of insight into the operations of a factory. These twin models have the capability to ingest real-time data from factory floor assets and drive them up the information technology stack for production planning, compliance, failure analysis, yield and quality control. This session will cover the types of Digital twin in the context of factories, essential components of a digital twin, the software stack necessary to build a digital twin, and how might a digital transformation begin within the factory floor.

What if we could all start doing things the “Lasso Way”? Could a TV show about a small-time college football coach from Kansas, hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, change the way you look at leadership, serving, and bringing out the best in your team?
This session, “6 Leadership Lessons from Ted Lasso”, will answer all of these questions and more. Through the use of video clips, commentary, and my own stories, we’ll dive into each of the six lessons and apply them both to our lives and how we lead those we work with.

Binil Starly
Director and Professor, School of Manufacturing Systems and Networks
Binil Starly serves as the Founding School Director and Professor in the School of Manufacturing Systems & Networks, Arizona State University. He has over 20 years of experience in Digital manufacturing. His laboratory is working on technologies that merge the digital and the physical world towards advancing both discrete and continuous manufacturing. His work is supported by the US National Science Foundation, Department of Energy (NNSA) and the Manufacturing Institutes (MxD and CESMII). He has received the NSF CAREER award, SME ‘20 Most Influential Professors in Smart Manufacturing’ and numerous teaching awards during his academic career.

Brian Summerall
Director, Tod Bush Leadership Center
Brian Summerall, Director of the Tod Bush Leadership Center, has had a 35-year-long history with the ministry of Young Life and a deep passion for the impact that this organization has on young people around the world. He has been in local area leadership roles as well as national and international training and strategic planning roles since 1987. Having attended Dallas Theological Seminary combined with a Film degree from Baylor University, Brian has a passion for speaking, teaching, writing, and marketing. In 2018, Brian became a Certified StoryBrand Guide and Copywriter (www.storybrand.com), helping companies, non-profits, and ministries clarify their messaging using the elements of story. Passionate about sharing his experience and knowledge with others, Brian often speaks at corporate gatherings, fundraisers, and leadership development conferences.

Charlotte Atchley
Editor, Baking & Snack
Charlotte Atchley is the editor of Baking & Snack. She has spent 12 years covering all aspects of the baking industry including formulating, operations, bakery expansions and trends. Ms. Atchley also launched and hosts the magazine’s first podcast, “Since Sliced Bread,” which features in-depth conversations with leaders in the industry. Ms. Atchley has a bachelor’s degree in communication from Southwest Baptist University as well as a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri.

Justus Larson
Senior Director of Operations, United States Bakeries
Justus Larson is the Senior Director of Operations overseeing manufacturing and distribution for United States Bakeries. US Bakeries also known as Franz Bakery began in 1906 and has grown to include multiple Bakeries throughout the Pacific and Intermountain regions. He began his career with Franz in 2001 and has spent most of his time there working in the engineering department at a local and corporate level until assuming his current role in 2022. He has also served on BEMA’s Bakery Industry Forum since 2020. He currently lives outside of Portland, OR with his wife, son and two daughters.

Karen Reed
Global Director of Marketing and Communications, Kwik Lok
As Kwik Lok’s Global Marketing and Communications Director, Karen Reed supports the oversite of Kwik Lok’s global brand and has also played a key role in the development of Kwik Lok’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. Karen has been with Kwik Lok for more than five years. During her tenure she has been instrumental in instituting a sustainability planning, governance, and reporting system to hold Kwik Lok accountable for making progress on Kwik Lok’s CSR strategies.

Karl Thorson
Global Food Safety and Sanitation Manager; General Mills
Karl received his Bachelors of Science degree in Food Science from the University of Minnesota. His experience includes 27 years with Pillsbury/General Mills in both plant and corporate roles in Quality, Operations, and Sanitation. He has worked with multiple product platforms including cereal, pizza, yogurt, dough products, snacks, pet and other dry, refrigerated and frozen products. His areas of focus include allergen and pathogen control, sanitary design, and sanitation training/education. He chaired the GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) Sanitation Working Group for 3 years and currently hosts an annual sanitary design workshop. He also works with BEMA (Bakery Equipment Manufacturers and Allieds), Alliance for Advanced Sanitation, and PMMI (The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies) OpX Leadership Network to help advance food safety through sanitation and sanitary design for the food industry. He has been recognized as the Baking & Snack’s 2016 Operations Executive of the Year and 2016 Sanitarian of the Year by IAFP (International Association of Food Protection).

Kris McCarty
Vice President of Sales, Americas; RealWear
Kris bring with her a MS in Strategy and Leadership from Michigan State University, as well as a BS in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Prior to joining RealWear in 2022, Kris has experienced an impressive career in the energy sector with GE and Eaton.

Marjorie Hellmer
President; Cypress Research
Marjorie Hellmer, President & co-founder of Cypress Research, is a research fanatic who uses her great passion to help organizations and industries grow by leveraging data-driven insights. Now in its 23rd year, Cypress Research translates insights into actionable strategies for food manufacturers and the supply chain organizations that support them, conducting quantitative and qualitative research with a focus on trends that drive industries, and benchmarking brand, customer and employee experiences with businesses. She is a skilled and creative research practitioner with expertise in a wide variety of methodologies including survey design and data analysis, focus group facilitation and executive depth-interviewing. Ms. Hellmer holds a Master’s degree in psychology with a specialization in applied research methodology from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. In her free time, Marjorie enjoys scuba diving and is an avid outdoor runner.

Mike LaValle
Corporate Account Manager; Intralox
Mike is an alumnus of Louisiana State University. He began his career with Bank One/Chase Bank as a Corporate Account Manager for Business Banking Services. He moved to the baking industry in 2006 with Intralox in New Orleans and currently serves as a Corporate Account Manger in the bakery and snack segment. In 2016, Mike joined the Baking Industry Forum and in June 2022, he was elected to the BEMA Board of Directors. Mike has also been a member of ASB since 2010.

Naomi J. Hardy
CLC Speaker
Naomi J. Hardy is a national speaker, coach, and consultant. Her areas of expertise include change leadership and transition, employee engagement, leadership effectiveness, and relationship coaching. She brings over 25 years of Human Resource Management and Training & Development experience, and over 10 years Change Management/Change Leadership Experience.
Naomi is dedicated to assisting organizations in implementing change while minimizing stakeholder risk. Her certifications include Change Management, certified DiSC behavioral assessment facilitator, Certified Career, Life and relationship Coach, and John Maxwell Leadership Corporate Facilitator Certification. Helping organizations embrace fear and find the good in change as they navigate the current trends in the workplace is her pride and joy.
Naomi is the winner of the ‘Amazing Woman Award’ for her community service work and has won the Austin and Houston eWomen ‘Speaker Challenge’.

Rasma Zvaners
Vice President of Regulatory and Technical Services, ABA
Rasma is the liaison for ABA’s Food Technical Regulatory Affairs Professionals and Energy and Environmental Professionals Groups. Rasma assists Members with the implementation of food safety regulations and ingredient-specific issues. She also works closely with other ABA staff on nutrition policy issues. Rasma manages ABA’s Energy Star initiative and sustainability work. Additionally, Rasma is active in several industry groups, including the Biogenic CO2 Coalition, Farm to Market, Grain Chain, and the Listeria Coalition.

Tom Egan
Vice President, Industry Services, PMMI
Egan joined the PMMI staff in 2003, following more than 20 years with various companies providing packaging solutions. This includes responsibilities at Hoppmann Corporation and Eaton Corporation. Egan served on PMMI’s Board of Directors and Show Committee in the late 1990s.
Now at PMMI for 20 years, Egan is involved with various projects including customer program facilitation, Technical Services, meeting content, and serves as staff liaison to other industry organizations including Cold Pressure Council.
